Notes on the Spirit of Christmas Present, and the State Fair Medal, by Carl T.
October 14, 2008

I have been a member of OCWC for over 8 years!  My Wood Carving is better, thanks to being part of Oklahoma City Wood Carvers Club!  I have attended the great seminars sponsored by the club and I have watched and learned from many of the members in the club.  Rex Branson convinced me that to provide drama to your pieces, you need deep relief.   Many of the members, Bob G, Pete Z. and others have taught me that in the round, means more like a circle than a square.  The local seminars we have during our programs have been inspirational, like the sessions with Bob S. on facial feature, eyes, lips, and nose.  And the session on carving a closed fist was helpful.  Les S., with his accurate cuts, knows that caricature still means precise exaggeration!

I had three goals when I set out on carving The Spirit of Christmas Present.

One was to create an original design
Secondly, I wanted a piece that was dramatic
And thirdly, I wanted the piece to communicate a message.

I have learned that a good base, presents a wood sculpture, like a picture frame displays and accents a picture.  I used a Christmas Santa of my wife’s to study the way a robe drapes from a standing figure.

I was pleasantly surprised when I won the State Fair Wood Carving Bronze medal.  I owe a lot to the club and to its members for their support and encouragement!  If we had a trophy case, I would want the medal displayed as a tribute to OCWC and to the members who share their talent and expect nothing in return.
