For those who want to see "Woodcarving on the Net" I would recommend the following sites on YouTube.   Episode 1 is the first of the three woodcarving videos featuring Spirit Williams, a professional woodcarver.   This is an introduction to woodcarving with emphasis on relief carving.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZHl1T712VU&NR=1   Episode 2 is the beginning of a relief carving of an iris.  There is a major emphasis on safety and the use of gouges.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJPcN49i22Q&feature=related   Episode 3 is a little more detail on tools, techniques, and finishing.  She does not complete the project but does enough to give a good job of illustrating what she is doing.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eyum_exgzE4&feature=related   Each of the three episodes require about fifteen minutes, so be prepared to devote an hour or so for the whole thing.

Oklahoma Sculpture Society

The Oklahoma Sculpture Society will host Pete Zachry at their meeting of February 14. 2008.  Glen Thomas, 2008 program chairman for the Society, invited Pete to present a program about woodcarving and to demonstrate this art form.  Pete has several completed and “in process” pieces that he plans to bring to illustrate the various materials and styles of woodcarving and a series of seven carvings showing the stages of development of a woodcarving from the initial cut out to the completed piece.  He will actually do a rough carving during the program to demonstrate the techniques and tools.  Pete will also present a computer slide show of the winning carvings at the past two woodcarving shows so the sculptors can see a broad view of what is available at that event.

The Oklahoma Sculpture Society meets the second Thursday of each month at the City Arts Center.  Their site, <http://www.ossculpture.com/>, illustrates the quality of their work and is surely worth the time to visit on the web.
