On Thurs. Dec. 6th, the Edmond Senior Center Carvers held their First Annual Woodcarving Exhibition which exceeded all expectations for a first event.  We had about eight tables with a dozen carvers represented and a wide range of items shown. There was very good media coverage from the Daily Oklahoman, with a nice layout and four pictures showing several of the carvers and their projects.  Steve B.

GLEN THOMAS, a local artist and sculptor (which includes clay, bronze, and wood) will be presenting the program in January.  His subject will be “Clay Sculpting for Woodcarvers” and he will not only have some examples, but will do some actual sculpting in oil base clay.  Glen is a retired art teacher and currently has his studio at his home in Blanchard.  He continuously shows his work at 50 Penn Place and teaches sculpting at the Fair Grounds several times a year.  He also does painting and gives instruction in that medium.  Glen has a special show at 50 Penn Place opening January 9th, the Friday before our January meeting.  Everyone is invited to come by and have a good look at his work.

Show and Tell – It seems that our Show & Tell participation has slacked off more than a little bit.  This is really a wonderful part of our monthly get togethers and we should all try our best to take part.  The carving does not need to be the very latest thing you’ve done, or even the best.  We all just like to see what our fellow carvers are doing or have done.  Try to bring something to each meeting  – it is a lot more fun that way.

February will be our annual “No Excuses Show & Tell”.  The program will be each member bring something they have carved and tell us a little about it.  It is an excellent method of getting to know each other so be ready to say a few words about yourself, too.  Lets all take part.

Name Tags – Everyone is to have a name tag  –   a carved one is preferable.  For those who do not have name tags we will have the paper, stick-on blanks for you to write your name.  Guests will also be expected to sign-in and have a name tag, too.  If you haven’t carved

yours yet, there is plenty of help available to get you started.  Just Ask.

By-Laws – The By-Laws Committee has done a lot of work to get our By-Laws brought up to date and better organized.  Copies of the new By-Laws will be available for review at the January meeting.  No action will be taken at this meeting; however, they will be brought before the entire membership at the February meeting.

The new year will see a bit of a change in the day and location of the Executive Committee meetings for 2009.  For January we will meet on the Third Tuesday at the Panara Bread restaurant on Western Avenue just a few blocks north of 63rd St. in Nichols Hills.  Remember, this is an open meeting and all members are encouraged to attend, participate and get involved!

2009 Show  – The Judge we had lined up for the 2009 show has decided not to accept the offer so we need to have the membership give us some recommendation as to who they would like.  The field is open but we need to decide rather quickly since these individuals set their schedule for the year very soon.  Any suggestion will be given every consideration  – even for the 2010 show.  It’s not too early to begin planning for the future.
