The program for July will give you a chance to carve some exotic wood that you may not have not tried before.   We will have some spoon, ladle, spatula, butter knife, pie server, and letter opener cut-outs of unusual wood available.  These were cut from fresh-cut trees and have been kept frozen to ensure they will be fresh for carving.  The cut-outs will be for sale (very inexpensive).  If you like, you can simply carve it and donate it back to the club.  These donated items will be offered for sale at this year’s show.  This is a chance to expand your experience with different woods and help raise a few dollars for the treasury.  Be certain to bring your knives and a couple of gouges to help with the spoon bowl. There will be a very great range of sizes and can vary from the very simple letter opener to a much more complex and larger ladle. Some of the woods include Cherry, Lilac, Juneberry, Grape, Pear, Buckthorn, Apple, Box Elder, Plum, and others. Plan to join in for a fun and educational carving project.

Since these projects are in green wood, they will require some form of finish to prevent splitting, cracking and/or checking. The spoon carvers in the club have available some flax seed oil which works really well; however, they need to be soaked for

several days and then allowed to cure for a couple of months before they are used. Following that, they may be used and washed in a normal manner (not dishwasher safe) and can last for years without further treatment. The more they are used, the better the patina becomes.

September is the time for our annual display at the Midwest City Library. This is scheduled so we receive the maximum exposure just before our show. The display will be set up on the morning of September 1st, that is a Tuesday. Earl Cox is the contact person dealing directly with the Library and he has indicated that the Saturday Demonstration will be the second Saturday, September 12th.  Contact Earl by email at:
earlcox@cox.net  or by phone at: 732-5143

The July Board of Directors meeting will be Tuesday, July 21st , 7:00 PM, Panara Bread at 67th and North Western.

July 10 & 11 will be the EOWA (Tulsa) WONDERFUL WORLD OF WOOD show and everyone who can should certainly plan to attend. They have a new site this year at the Union School 6th & 7th Grade Center, 10100 E. 61st St. That is a Friday and Saturday.

The Seminar with Phil & Vickie Bishop scheduled for November 2-4 is full; however, to make certain that your place in the class is secure, you should get the $100 deposit to Kent Wallace as soon as you can. There will be a cut-off date for securing your place. In the event that you decide to withdraw, there are several alternates ready to step up and take your place. If you are not already on the list, you can have your name added to the list of alternates by contacting Kent Wallace.
